What are the types of live tool holders for special applications?

Sep. 24, 2026

In addition to standard live tool holders, there are specialized live tool holders that significantly expand the machining capabilities of turning centers:

1. Adjustable Y-axis live tool holder (also known as a "pseudo-Y-axis" holder): For turning centers lacking a physical Y-axis,

operations such as off-center drilling, slot milling, or face milling may be required. An eccentric live tool holder (pseudo-Y-axis holder)

allows the machining plane to be adjusted by shifting the tool a specific distance along the Y-axis to perform the task.

2. Eccentric live tool holder: Used to compensate for insufficient Y-axis travel by offsetting the tool position in the Y-axis direction.

3. Slotting live tool holder: Operations that previously required a slotting machine or broaching machine can now be easily performed using this type of holder.

4. Gear hobbing live tool holder: Ideal for machining short sections of straight gear teeth on shaft-type components;

     this holder allows for single-pass machining and is suitable for gear profiles with a module of less than 2.

5. Universal live tool holder (also known as an adjustable-angle holder): Used for machining inclined holes at various angles.

6. Saw blade/milling cutter holder: Used for high-efficiency operations such as slotting and cut-off.

7. Dual-head and multi-head tool holders: Designed for specialized workpieces or dual-spindle machines; these can significantly boost production efficiency.
